Homosexuality In Prisons

An inmate of the Koforidua Prisons has disclosed that some of them engage in homosexuality because of acute hunger.
“We are forced by hunger to practice this nasty act because those of us who are always hungry have to succumb to the advances of the better off inmates in order to survive.
The inmate’s revelation was in response to an admonition by the Eastern Regional Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, to the prisoners not to indulge in homosexuality.
Mr. Ampofo was at the Koforidua prisons yesterday to donate maize, blankets, plastic plates and cups for use by the inmates.
“The unthinkable must be done to enable one to get food to survive the harsh prison conditions,” the convict told the minister who said homosexuality promoted the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Mr. Ampofo told the prison authorities to deal ruthlessly with inmates involved in sodomy saying, “it is an abomination before the Almighty.”
“Culprits must be punished in order to curb the spread of AIDS,” he said and asked the inmates to mend their ways in order to fit into society, after their release.
